MG plans new large SUV with EV and plug-in hybrid

JSW MG Motor India has confirmed plans to enter the plug-in hybrid segment in India with an upcoming large SUV scheduled for launch around October this year. The model, internally codenamed 520, will be offered in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid forms. Once introduced, the PHEV version is expected to compete with models such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO, while the electric variant could target the Mahindra XEV 9S in the growing premium EV space.

The new SUV is understood to be based on the Wuling Starlight 560, a model currently sold in select international markets. The vehicle features a large, upright profile with a prominent grille, heavy body cladding and an MPV-like rear design. Measuring roughly 4.7 metres in length with a wheelbase exceeding 2.8 metres, the SUV is expected to offer both five- and seven-seat layouts, positioning it firmly in the large family SUV segment.

Internationally, the plug-in hybrid version combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 20.5kWh battery and an electric motor, producing a combined output of about 197 HP and 230 Nm. Test cycle figures suggest an electric-only driving range of roughly 100 km and a total range exceeding 1000 km with the fuel tank included. The pure-electric variant, meanwhile, uses a 56.7kWh battery powering a front-mounted motor rated at 136 HP and 200 Nm, with a claimed range of around 500 km under the CLTC standard. Fast-charging capability is also supported.

Pricing for the India-spec version has not yet been announced. However, the plug-in hybrid version may be positioned alongside similarly sized diesel SUVs, potentially with a modest premium for its electrified drivetrain, while the EV could overlap with existing premium electric SUVs in the Rs. 20-30 lakh range. It also remains unclear whether the new SUV will be sold through MG’s premium Select retail network or its mainstream dealership chain. The launch will mark MG’s first entry into the mass-market plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle segment in India.
