Maruti launches e Vitara EV in India with battery subscription model

Maruti Suzuki has introduced the e Vitara, its first fully electric SUV for the Indian market, with an introductory starting price of Rs. 10.99 lakhs (ex-showroom). This price excludes the battery, which is supplied through the company’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme. Under this model, customers pay a usage charge of Rs. 3.99 per kilometre for the battery.

Bookings for the electric SUV are now open with a token amount of Rs. 21,000. Maruti Suzuki has not yet released the complete variant-wise pricing structure including the battery subscription, although the announced entry price corresponds to the Delta variant paired with the smaller battery pack.

Battery options, performance and range

The e Vitara is offered with two battery configurations in a front-wheel-drive layout. The 49kWh version produces 144 HP and delivers an ARAI-claimed range of up to 440 km. The larger 61kWh battery develops 174 HP with a claimed driving range of up to 543 km. Both versions generate 189 Nm of torque.

It is available in three trims – Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The base Delta variant comes only with the 49kWh battery, while the Zeta and Alpha variants are paired exclusively with the 61kWh pack.

Charging capability

According to the manufacturer, charging from 10 to 80 percent using a 7.4kW AC charger takes roughly 6.5 hours for the smaller battery and about 9 hours for the larger unit. DC fast charging support of up to 70kW allows the same 10-80 percent charge window in approximately 45 minutes.

Exterior design

Styling of the production e Vitara draws cues from the eVX concept previously shown by the brand. The SUV features LED headlamps, a sculpted body profile and protective cladding elements. It also incorporates an active grille shutter system intended to assist battery cooling.

From the side, the vehicle gets pronounced wheel arches and aerodynamic 18-inch alloy wheels. The rear design includes connected LED tail-lamps, a roof spoiler and centrally placed badging.

Interior and features

Inside, the cabin uses a dual-tone brown and black theme with soft-touch materials in select areas. The dashboard layout integrates a digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system positioned slightly apart, creating an asymmetrical design theme. A shift-by-wire selector is placed on the raised centre console.

Feature highlights include a 10.25-inch digital display, a 10-inch infotainment unit with smartphone connectivity, Infinity audio, wireless charging, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, powered driver seat adjustment, sliding and reclining rear seats, connected-car functions and a fixed glass sunroof.

Safety equipment comprises seven airbags, parking sensors at both ends, a 360-degree camera, tyre-pressure monitoring, electronic parking brake and Level-2 ADAS functions.

Warranty and ownership package

Maruti Suzuki is offering a 5-year warranty on the battery and a 3-year vehicle warranty, with an optional extended plan available. The company is also bundling complimentary home charger installation and one year of free charging support.

Market positioning

The e Vitara marks Maruti Suzuki’s entry into the mainstream electric passenger vehicle segment in India. It will compete with models such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG Windsor, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6 and other similarly positioned electric SUVs.
