Voluntary recall issued for Land Cruiser and LX over gearbox software issue

Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX SUVs have been placed under a voluntary recall in India due to a potential software-related issue affecting the transmission control system. According to the manufacturers, a total of 969 units of the Land Cruiser and 117 units of the LX could be impacted.

The affected Land Cruiser units were produced between 4 September 2024 and 30 September 2025, while the concerned LX models were built between 6 March 2025 and 29 September 2025. The recall has been initiated as a preventive step to update the transmission control computer software responsible for managing gearbox operation.

Both SUVs share a common platform and powertrain, including a twin-turbo V6 diesel engine paired with a 10-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. This electronically controlled gearbox relies on linear solenoids to regulate shift functions. If one of these solenoids were to malfunction, the system may fail to properly relay the fault to the engine control unit.

In such a scenario, the transmission could rev excessively in certain gears, potentially reducing power delivery at higher speeds and in extreme cases, causing internal gearbox damage. There is also a possibility that transmission fluid leakage onto hot exhaust components could increase fire risk. However, the brands have stated that no incidents related to this issue have been reported in India so far.

As the concern is linked to software calibration, the remedy involves reprogramming the relevant electronic control modules. Authorised dealerships will contact owners of the affected vehicles to schedule the update, though customers may also proactively reach out to service centres for verification and assistance.
