Porsche K1 flagship SUV to debut with V6 and V8 engines

Porsche’s upcoming range-topping SUV, internally known as the K1, will no longer debut as an electric-only model. The vehicle, which is set to sit above the Cayenne in the brand’s global lineup, was originally planned as a pure EV based on the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). However, the company has reportedly revised its strategy and will introduce the K1 with internal combustion engine options instead.

Shift from SSP to PPC platform

The change in direction is understood to be linked to delays in the development of the SSP architecture, particularly in relation to software integration. In addition, a slowdown in global EV demand has prompted several manufacturers to reassess their electrification timelines.

As a result, the K1 is now expected to be built on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). This architecture also underpins the upcoming Audi Q9, making the Porsche K1 closely related mechanically to Audi’s new three-row flagship SUV.

Engine options and positioning

With the move to the PPC platform, the Porsche K1 is likely to be offered with twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 and 3.0-litre V6 engines. Both conventional petrol and plug-in hybrid variants are expected to be part of the lineup at launch.

The SUV is anticipated to be available in multiple seating configurations, including four-, five- and seven-seat layouts. In terms of market positioning, the K1 is expected to compete with established full-size luxury SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7.

Electric version still planned

While the EV-only debut has been shelved, Porsche has not abandoned plans for an all-electric K1 altogether. Reports indicate that a fully electric variant remains under development and could be introduced at a later stage, once the underlying platform and market conditions align.

Sharing architecture and components with the Audi Q9 is also expected to help Porsche manage development costs, especially as it continues investing in dedicated electric models like the Macan Electric and the forthcoming Cayenne Electric.

Expected launch timeline

The Audi Q9 is projected to make its global debut in 2026, with market launch likely in 2027. The Porsche K1 is expected to follow approximately a year later, suggesting a global debut around 2028. Production is anticipated to take place at the Volkswagen Group’s facility in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside related models.
