Renault Bridger Concept previews rugged new sub-4 metre SUV for India

Renault has announced a new concept vehicle called the Renault Bridger Concept, which is expected to preview the brand’s upcoming sub-4 metre SUV for the Indian market. The concept will be officially revealed on March 10 and is likely to indicate the design direction for Renault’s second compact SUV positioned alongside the Renault Kiger.

Early teasers released by the carmaker suggest that the Bridger Concept will feature a more rugged styling approach. The silhouette appears relatively boxy and upright, while the rear design includes a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. These elements hint at an SUV-inspired aesthetic that prioritises a tougher visual identity compared to some of the brand’s existing compact models.

Despite the robust styling cues, Renault has indicated that the production version will remain under four metres in length, allowing it to qualify for India’s sub-4 metre tax category. At the same time, the company claims the model will focus on maintaining adequate cabin space for passengers.

Visual hints from teaser material also show illuminated Renault lettering at the front, a styling feature seen on some of the brand’s global models such as the latest Renault Duster. This suggests that the Bridger Concept may incorporate design elements aligned with Renault’s newer international styling language.

Renault has confirmed that the production version of this SUV will be designed and developed in India. Manufacturing is expected to take place at the company’s facility in Chennai, reinforcing the importance of the Indian market in Renault’s global strategy.

In terms of powertrain, the upcoming model is likely to share mechanical components with the Kiger. This means it could use the same 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces around 100 HP and is currently offered with both manual and CVT gearbox options.

The new SUV could also play a role in Renault’s broader expansion plans for markets outside Europe. The company recently announced a major investment programme aimed at strengthening its presence in regions such as India, South Africa and the Middle East. If the Bridger moves to production, it is expected to be targeted at these markets.

As for the name itself, the Bridger badge has been chosen to reflect the idea of connecting markets and expanding Renault’s international portfolio. Whether the concept’s name will carry over to the final production model remains to be confirmed.

More details about the Bridger Concept, including its full design and features, will be revealed when Renault officially unveils the vehicle on March 10.
