2024 Kia Carnival

Kia Carnival hybrid variant likely to expand India lineup this year

Kia is preparing to broaden the powertrain lineup of the latest-generation Carnival in India with the addition of a petrol-hybrid version. The hybrid model is expected to join the current diesel-only offering sometime this year and could be positioned at a relatively more accessible price point than the existing variant.

The fourth-generation Carnival, introduced in India in late 2024, marked a substantial shift in positioning for the MPV. Sold as a CKD import in a single fully loaded Limousine specification, the model currently retails at around Rs. 59.50 lakhs (ex-showroom). It is powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 193 PS and 441 Nm.

Hybrid powertrain details

For the upcoming version, Kia is expected to introduce a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor in a full parallel hybrid configuration. The system combines for an output of about 242 HP and 367 Nm of torque, with a 54 kW motor assisting the petrol engine. Transmission duties are likely to be handled by a six-speed automatic gearbox, and the setup is expected to include multi-level regenerative braking.

In international markets, the Carnival is offered with multiple petrol, diesel and hybrid options and the hybrid version is available in several trims. For India, however, Kia may continue with its strategy of offering a single high-spec configuration.

Efficiency and equipment expectations

Global specifications suggest fuel economy figures of up to around 14.5 km/l for the hybrid variant, though official India-certified numbers will be announced closer to launch.

Design and equipment levels are expected to remain broadly aligned with the current model’s premium positioning. Possible exterior elements include large alloy wheels, dark-themed styling accents, LED lighting and dual sunroofs.

Inside, the MPV is expected to retain features such as powered sliding rear doors, a powered tailgate, integrated window shades and multiple cabin power outlets. The dashboard layout is likely to include dual 12.3-inch screens, a head-up display, a premium Bose audio system and an in-cabin camera with passenger intercom functionality.

Advanced driver-assistance systems available globally include autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-keeping assist, highway driving assist, parking collision prevention and a surround-view camera system. Availability of the full suite in the India-spec model will be confirmed at launch.

The addition of a petrol-hybrid option would expand the Carnival’s appeal by offering an alternative to the diesel engine while aligning the model with the broader industry move toward electrified powertrains.
