2026 Audi RS5 Debuts With 639 HP Plug-In Hybrid V6

New Audi RS5 becomes powerful plug-in hybrid performance sedan and estate

Audi has unveiled the next generation RS5, introducing the performance model as a plug-in hybrid for the first time. Built on the brand’s latest A5 platform, the new RS5 arrives in both sedan (liftback) and Avant estate body styles and effectively replaces the outgoing RS5 as well as the RS4 Avant in global markets.

Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain With Significant Output Boost

At the heart of the new RS5 is a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission. The combustion engine alone produces 510 HP, while the hybrid system lifts total output to a combined 639 HP and 825 Nm.

Audi claims the performance sedan can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in about 3.6 seconds. However, the addition of the hybrid system and battery has substantially increased kerb weight, with the Avant version weighing around 2370 kg.

The plug-in setup uses a 25.9 kWh battery pack (about 22 kWh usable). When fully charged, the RS5 is expected to offer more than 80 km of electric-only driving range. Charging via AC is supported at up to 11 kW.

Updated Quattro System And New Rear Differential

The new RS5 introduces an updated version of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The centre differential can distribute up to 85 percent of torque to the rear axle or as much as 70 percent to the front depending on grip and driving conditions. A preload function is also designed to improve response during sudden throttle inputs.

Additionally, the performance model features a new electronically controlled rear differential with torque-vectoring capability. Audi states the system can actively influence left-to-right torque distribution almost instantly, improving cornering stability and traction under aggressive driving.

Battery Packaging Affects Practicality

Positioning the battery near the rear axle has reduced luggage capacity compared to non-hybrid A5 versions. The Avant offers roughly 361 litres of boot space, while the liftback sedan provides slightly less at around 350 litres.

Interior Updates Focus On Usability And Sportiness

Inside, the RS5 carries forward Audi’s latest digital-heavy cabin layout but introduces revisions aimed at improving usability. Physical steering-wheel buttons have returned in place of earlier touch-sensitive controls, and the display graphics have been updated for improved clarity.

The cabin receives a sport-focused treatment with extensive suede-like Dinamica trim, contrasting accents, and standard powered sports seats with heating and massage functions. Ventilation and certain comfort features remain optional depending on specification.

Wider Stance And Typical RS Design Elements

Visually, the RS5 gains a noticeably wider stance than the standard A5, with flared wheel arches and broader tracks. Exterior highlights include a large performance grille, redesigned LED lighting signatures, prominent oval exhaust outlets and standard 20-inch alloy wheels, with 21-inch options available. Carbon-ceramic brakes are also offered.

Both body styles feature a sharply sloping roofline, giving the sedan a fastback-style silhouette while the Avant also adopts a more tapered rear design than before.

India Launch Still Unconfirmed

Audi has not yet confirmed plans to introduce the new RS5 in India. As a high-performance, low-volume imported model, its arrival would depend on market strategy and potential trade developments. If introduced, it would likely serve as a halo offering in the brand’s performance portfolio.
