Toyota unveils first three-row electric Highlander for US market

Toyota has introduced the all-electric 2027 Toyota Highlander for the US market, marking the nameplate’s transition to a battery-electric platform. This model becomes Toyota’s first three-row BEV in the United States and will be assembled at its Kentucky facility, with battery modules sourced from its North Carolina plant and a supplier partner. Sales are scheduled to begin in late 2026, while pricing details will be announced closer to launch.

The new Highlander adopts a cleaner and more aerodynamic exterior compared to its predecessor. Design highlights include broad fenders, flush door handles and a full-width LED daytime running light signature. Riding on 19-inch wheels as standard, the SUV maintains an upright stance typical of a three-row vehicle, while incorporating smoother surfaces aimed at improving aerodynamic efficiency and overall range.

Inside, the cabin has been redesigned with a stronger focus on digital integration. A 14-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster come as standard, along with Toyota’s latest multimedia system and Safety Sense 4.0 suite. The SUV offers seating for up to seven occupants and features heated front seats, soft-touch interior materials and configurable ambient lighting. Higher trims add ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats. With the third row folded, cargo capacity exceeds 1274 litres, and a fixed panoramic glass roof will also be available.

The Highlander BEV will be offered with two battery options: a 77.0kWh pack and a larger 95.8kWh unit. The latter, available with all-wheel drive, delivers a manufacturer-estimated range of up to 515 km. Front-wheel-drive versions produce 224 HP and 268 Nm of torque, while AWD variants generate up to 343 HP and 438 Nm. The SUV features a North American Charging System (NACS) port for access to fast-charging networks and supports vehicle-to-load functionality. AWD models also include systems such as Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control, with Toyota highlighting the platform’s low centre of gravity for stable handling and everyday usability.
