Volvo rolls out major OTA update improving infotainment interface across 2.5 million cars

Volvo has announced a large over-the-air (OTA) software update for a significant number of its vehicles worldwide. The update will reach around 2.5 million cars manufactured from early 2020 onwards and aims to improve the overall digital experience inside the vehicle.

The update introduces Volvo Car UX, a redesigned interface built on Google’s Android Automotive operating system (AAOS). According to the company, this is the biggest OTA software update it has released so far. The update focuses on simplifying the infotainment system and making commonly used functions easier to access.

With the new interface, the home screen now highlights frequently used features so drivers can reach them more quickly without navigating through multiple menus. Volvo says the updated layout is designed to make the system more intuitive and reduce the number of touch inputs required while driving.

A new content screen has also been added, bringing commonly used apps and controls directly to the main interface. This allows drivers to perform actions such as changing music while using navigation without leaving Google Maps.

Another addition is a contextual bar that changes depending on driving conditions or recently used functions. For example, when the car is moving at low speeds, the system can show a shortcut to the surround-view camera system to help drivers manoeuvre in tight spaces.

Plug-in hybrid models will also receive some specific interface changes. Drive modes will now be available directly on the home screen, allowing drivers to quickly switch between hybrid mode and fully electric driving.

Volvo says the redesigned infotainment system also brings a refreshed visual layout that improves menu navigation. The changes are based on customer feedback and user research conducted by the company.

The OTA update will be rolled out to vehicles produced since early 2020 across approximately 85 markets worldwide. Around 2.5 million cars are expected to receive the update.

In India, compatible current models include the EC40, EX40, XC60 and XC90. Previously sold models such as the C40, XC40, S60, S90 and V90 are also expected to receive the update.

Volvo says the update will be available free of cost for vehicles that regularly receive software updates and have internet connectivity. Owners who are unable to install the update remotely may need to visit an authorised service centre, where charges could apply.

The availability of the update may vary depending on the market and model year. Volvo has also indicated that select cars could receive a future OTA update featuring Google Gemini integration.
